Company description
The establishment of modern-day Johannesburg began in 1886 with the discovery of gold. Over the next 50 years the population exploded, making it the largest city in South Africa and the economic capital of sub-Saharan Africa.

The Arup office in the city, the first in South Africa, was established in 1954, and the young firm began to contribute to the growth of a world-class metropolis with major contributions to the city’s iconic buildings of the 70s and 80s.

As well as the award-winning radio and microwave towers in Brixton and Hillbrow that still dominate the city’s skyline, Arup’s contribution to the city continues through many new developments such as the mixed-use Melrose Arch and the acclaimed Constitutional Court – housing the country’s highest court and born of the

Since the 60s, Arup has been associated with the growth of OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg’s main international airport, and has recently completed major additions. The firm is currently working on proposals for the next major phase of expansion.

Arup is also the Independent Certifier for Gautrain, a rapid rail system linking Johannesburg and Pretoria to the airport.

As part of the ongoing upgrade of public transport in many of South Africa’s larger cities, Arup has been instrumental in developing policies that provide the framework for property development around public transport interchanges.

A heartland of South African football, Johannesburg is the backbone of the professional game and Arup is involved in a wide range of works for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This includes event and transportation planning, infrastructure and stadium services and refurbishment of Cape Town Station. Arup’s award-winning Johannesburg Stadium forms part of the precinct for the games.
