As noted in the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services' Household Products Database, sodium bisulfate is one of the many synonyms for sodium acid sulfate. It is a dry acid in crystal, granular or powder form that is used as a pH adjuster, fungicide, herbicide or microbiocide (a product that kills microbes) in a variety of industries, such as household cleaning and swimming pool maintenance.
Sodium bisulfate may also be called sodium hydrogen sulfate, sulfuric acid, monosodium salts, sodium acid sulfate, sodium hydrosulfate or sodium hydrogen sulfate. Also, a quick search on ChemIDPlusAdvanced, a database operated by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, will show a host of other not-so-obvious names for it as well, such as nitre cake or niter cake. It has the chemical formula: HNaO4S
Uses for Sodium Bisulfate
Sodium bisulfate is often used in toilet bowl cleaners and dishwasher cleaning products. It can also be found in a multitude of other industries. Commonly used to control pH, it's found in aquarium and swimming pool products. It can even be found in dietary supplements and anti-fungal foot creams, according to search results using the National Institute of Health's Dietary Supplement Label Database and Daily Med database, respectively. Finally, it's also used in metal finishing.
Product Brands Containing Sodium Bisulfate
To see if certain products contain sodium bisulfate, try searching these databases using the chemical name, CAS number, or one of its synonyms (noted in the section above):
• The Environmental Working Group's (EWG) Guide to Healthy Cleaning
• The EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Database
• The Good Guide
• The National Library of Medicine's Hazardous Substances Data Bank
• National Institute of Health's Daily Med
• National Institute of Health's Dietary Supplement Label Database

Regulation, Health, and Safety
When a chemical is used in pharmaceutical preparations, personal care products, or as a food additive, it is monitored by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). When it is used for cleaning and industrial uses, it is monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
As noted in MedLine Plus, sodium bisulfate is very irritating to the skin and can cause severe eye damage if contact occurs. Also, swallowing the chemical can cause symptoms, such as diarrhea, vomiting, and low blood pressure. Also, it is considered acutely toxic according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as noted in the Pesticide Action Networkof North America database.
First-aid measures include seeking immediate medical attention and not inducing vomiting if the chemical is swallowed. Also, MedLine Plus notes to immediately drink water or milk unless otherwise instructed by medical personnel or if the person is unable to swallow due to convulsions or vomiting, for example. If the chemical gets on the skin, wash with water for at least 15 minutes. If the chemical is inhaled, move to an area with fresh air.
Environmental Effects
According to Scorecard, a pollution information guide part of the Good Guide, sodium bisulfate does not rank very high with regard to concerns about ecological toxicity and persistence, but it does have some concerns nonetheless.
Green Cleaning Alternatives
When it comes to shopping for green cleaning products, look for manufacturers who don't use this chemical or try your hand at some DIY-recipes. For example, sodium bisulfate is used in Affresh Dishwasher Cleanerbut is not present in the Lemi Shine Machine Cleaner.

Sodium metabisulfite is an inorganic compound composed of sodium, sulfur and oxygen. It's typically a white, or yellowish-white crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water, which leaves that unpleasantly familiar sulfur smell.

In Food

Sodium metabisulfite is commonly used as a food preservative for dried foods like potato chips, raisins and apples, as well as fruit concentrate juices. As a food product, the safe daily intake of sodium metabisulfite has been determined to be about .7 grams per kilogram of body weight. However, those with allergies to sulfites – often exhibited by rashes, hives and wheezing - may want to steer clear of this preservative altogether.

As a Cleaning Agent

The compound is also present in wines and beers, as it's used as both a sterilizer and an antioxidant in the process of brewing beer or fermenting wine. If you or someone you know claims to have an allergy to red wine, it's probably because of the presence of sodium metabisulfite.

As an antibacterial, the chemical is also used in the process of purifying water, cleaning water pipes and reverse osmosis membranes in desalinization equipment.

Additional Uses

Its acidic and preservative properties also make it an effective substitute for sodium bisulfite, a chemical that's used in traditional darkroom photography. Also, sodium metabisulfite is used as a bleaching agent in pulp and textile manufacture, as well as a reducing agent in pharmaceuticals. It's also a known preservative in cosmetics.

The chemical, in concentrated form, has also been used in landscape gardening as a tree stump remover, as it disintegrates the lignins – chemicals in plant cell walls – in the tree stumps, making them easier to remove.

Toxicity

While the allowable ingestion of sodium metabisulfite as a food preservative reduces it to sulfate in the liver, allowing for harmless elimination, excess exposure has been known to damage the immune system. It has also been linked to cancer, reproductive, developmental toxicity and neurotoxicity. Those with asthma and other allergies may also be sensitive to sodium metabisulfite.

Other Names

If you're into checking the labels of your food, drinks or household cleaning agents, keep in mind that sodium metabisulfite goes by a number of other names too, including sodium pyrosulfite; disodium salt pyrosulfurous acid; disulfurous acid, disodium salt, pyrosulfurous acid, disodium salt; sodium disulfite; sodium pyrosulfite; sodium disulfite; disodium disulfite.
WHAT İS THE SUN SHİELD
SUN SHİELD is a thin cover coating technology to prevent sunburn.departman of agriculture (USDA) agricultural research service (ARS) in years 1998-2000 requested from your own researcher Dr.michael Glenn (soil and botonical speacialist) and Dr.Gray Puterk (insectologist) to investigate on pests wich are damaging the plant.for this purpose when they saw bacterial pests and jumper lices attached to graps and pear gardens in the plant and fruit research station, they disided to get those pests under control.
For this reason they createded sun shield teknoloji to protecting the plant and gardens. This product is a thin and white layer that covered plan tor fruit to protecting them from sun burning and pests.
Appalachian Fruit research station (AFRS) starting to use sun shield on the plants and they sow how effective it is,so they desided to more researching on this teknoloji.
This product (sun shield) reduse 50 to 75 persent of sunburning and protectig from pests in a apple, pear, orange, grapes, pomegrate, olive, walnut, almond, pistachios, peanuts, potato, onion, tomato, pepper, bean, melon
JİM MACFERSON director of the Washington fruit research commission announced this product prevented apple trees from sun burn at least 50 persent and this is a great ekonomic advantage.
İn the gardens that they used this product ; fruits were reached more large and hemogenous sizes, juicy color and no stain, longer expiration date and also have more quality during storage time.
İn fact the main purpose of this producting, reducing the effect of the sun’s rays.as in the desert wearing white cloths is recommended for the release of direct sun light and heat this product is also covered the plant with a thin layer of white and prevent sun burn in the hot months of the summer.
The infra and ultraviolet rays of the sun cause sunburn in the plant and by placing this thin layer on the trees, leafs and fruits, prevents sunburn and it means more and greater product.
Also sun shield keep the trees cool under heat under heat and sun light
Sun shield reduses the heat in plants and leaves and also reduses stress in the plant which means gardner has a happy and stress free plant that has more product with beter quality and it makes the plant more comfortable and this also makes the pores of leaves more open and give more carbon dioxide and more fotosynthesis.
